A CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Ben Justice
There is no doubt that America has been moving in the wrong direction for many years now. It is a
continuing spiral downward into the abyss of moral degradation. The moral fabric of this country is not
what it should be. There are many policies that have been put in place that go diametrically against what
the founders intended — everything from socialism to pro-homosexual laws. Only those who have no or
very little moral sensitivity left in them are not extremely concerned about these things. Jehovah God
has given a very clear pattern of what he expects of nations — “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a
reproach to any people” (Pro. 14:34). It is truly sad beyond comprehension that more Christians are not
concerned about the direction of America. Many seemingly don’t care and keep a tight-lip about such
issues. The British statesman and philosopher Edmund Burke, who lived during the 1700’s, declared,
“The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” It is incredible that more
Christians are not expressing outrage over the things taking place in our beloved America. Evil is
triumphing and good men are doing nothing, all too often. When preachers stand up and expose the
moral evils of our day they are often accused of meddling in politics. This is a travesty, for God’s word
knows no limits on immorality no matter where it rears it ugly head (cf. Eph. 5:11). John the Baptist
exposed all the evils of Herod and it resulted in John being put in prison and eventually his life (Luke 3:
19). Brethren, when are we going to stop being so timid about these matters; when are we going to stop
allowing the world just to run over us; when are we going to stand up and be counted. Now, here is what
we have in our next president:
1.) Barack Obama is the most pro-abortion candidate in history. When even the die-hard liberals voted
in favor of a ban on partial-birth abortion, Barack Obama didn’t. Obama is on record of having supported
infanticide. He was not in favor of a bill when serving in the IL state legislature that would have given
care to babies who survive botched abortions. This is about the cold-blooded thing I have ever heard; it is
barbaric to the very core. Yet, this man is now our President.
I have listened to Obama’s speech at one of the most (if not the most) pro-abortion groups in America,
Planned Parenthood, in which he begins by praising and thanking this organization for all that they do. I
encourage everyone to listen to this speech online. It is shockingly revealing.
2.) Barack Obama is the most pro-homosexual candidate in history. In 1996, then President Bill Clinton,
who was considered the most pro-gay President in history at the time, signed into law the “Defense of
Marriage Act.” This was a good act, signed even by Bill Clinton, in which it protects states from being
forced to recognize out-of-state gay marriages. In other words, Missouri is not forced to recognize a gay-
marriage formed in Connecticut. Even Joe Biden, Obama’s Vice-President, signed the act. However,
Obama has promised homosexual activists that he will work to fully repeal the federal Defense of
Marriage Act.
Obama congratulated homosexual activists for getting married at a San Francisco gay event. Obama has
said he opposes “gay marriage,” but supports federal “civil unions.” He told the nation’s leading
homosexual lobby group: “I believe civil unions should include the same legal rights that accompany a
marriage license.” If Obama believes that civil unions should have the same legal rights that accompany
a marriage license, then what’s the difference? This is double talk. Obama has promised that he will
advocate for homosexual adoption of children. Obama has even tried to use the Bible to justify
homosexuality. He actually tried to take a portion of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount to justify his pro-
homosexual agenda.
These things are just the tip of the iceberg. Now, whether or not Obama will have his way is yet to be
seen, but it causes grave concern for Christians.
Here is an incredibly sad fact: The issues of abortion and homosexuality were rarely even brought up
during the campaign season and in the debates. Everything else in the world was discussed except for
the most important issues and that is moral issues. If you go back to this country's founding, it was just
the reverse. Note the following:
American founder and pioneer educator Noah Webster said,
The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws. All
the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their
despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.
John Adams was the second President of the United States. He stated,
Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
An entire volume could be filled with similar quotes from our country’s framers. In fact, many have.
In light of recent happenings that continue to threaten our beloved America, it is imperative that
Christians realize and understand their place in this world. Note the following points:
1.) The Christian’s first priority is to live as a Christian and to put God first (Matt. 6:33). Christians in
the past and in other parts of the world have had it a whole lot worse. But, they are faithful to God and
carry out his will. Sometimes, Christians get so caught up in the worldly affairs of life that they forgot
about what is really important.
2.) Even though Christians live on a higher plain than people of the world, realizing they are but pilgrims
and strangers, this doesn’t mean that Christians should cease to be a light in this dark world and seek to
make things better. Christians have the God-given responsibility to speak out against the evils of the
day no matter from whence they come.
3.) Christians will always be in the minority. Again, this ought not to cause us to throw up our hands
and quit. There is nothing more the devil would like than for the people of God to do nothing. Yet, all too
often we shy away from matters such as this, believing that the Christian ought not get involved.
4.) Christians have the great power and blessing of prayer to pray for civil rulers (I Tim. 2:1-2). We
should pray in behalf of these, hoping that they will be guided by principles of truth found in God’s Word.
5.) We must realize that no civil ruler is a success until they uphold God’s principles of morality. No
matter how successful they may be in other worldly affairs, a nation without God’s moral code is
ultimately doomed to failure.
