| WHERE WE STAND CONCERNING THE BIBLE The Bible itself teaches us how we should regard it. The Bible is the product of the breath of God. God "breathed out" scripture. The expression "given by inspiration of God" in 2 Tim. 3:16 means, "God-breathed" or "breathed out by God." According to 2 Tim. 3:16, that which constitutes "scripture" has been "breathed out" by God. A study of the word "scripture(s)" reveals that this includes the entire Old and New Testaments. The term "all" in 2 Tim. 3:16 means that inspiration extends to every and all parts of the Bible. This is the plenary inspiration of the Bible. Peter wrote that "holy men of God spake, as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (2 Pet. 1:21). The term "moved" comes from a word literally meaning, "to be borne along," or "to be carried along." The Holy Spirit carried along holy men of God to speak that which had been revealed to them. What did they speak? Obviously, words. This is verbal inspiration, which means word-for-word inspiration. When they spoke these words, they were therefore completely and totally free from error. They were not left to their own human judgment concerning what words to speak or write. Paul very clearly taught verbal inspiration in I Cor. 2:4 & 13. Inspiration extends to every word of the Bible. We accept no other view but plenary and verbal inspiration. This being true, the Bible is therefore totally and completely without error. The Bible has all-authority. Under the Christian dispensation, the Law of Christ is our authority for today. All that we do in our worship and service to God must be authorized by Christ (Matt. 28:18; Col. 3:17). The Bible is all-sufficient to meet our every spiritual need (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:3). Man needs nothing else. God has provided everything we need in his word to save us and keep us saved so that heaven can be our eternal home. |
